Emotional Literacy
The skill that shapes resilient, kind humans
Emotional literacy is the ability to identify, understand, and respond to emotions, in oneself and others, in a healthy way. We coach it intensely, every single day.
Why it matters so much
Research now recognizes social-emotional skills as a main factor in raising strong, resilient, successful children and young adults. Children with emotional literacy are simply healthier, and happier.
- Tolerate frustration better

- Build empathy for others
How we teach it
To help a child self-regulate, our teachers pay close attention and help them notice the triggers that come with strong emotions. During the preschool years children learn the basics: saying “hi” and “bye,” taking turns, “sorry, please, thank you,” and problem-solving.
We focus on resolving interpersonal conflicts in a peaceful, non-violent way. The teacher models compassionate behavior and sets the tone for the whole classroom, demonstrating kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness, and understanding. We encourage children to express their feelings in a positive, acceptable way, and to show empathy.
